Packing for a Horse Show
When people ask me how I got into home organizing, my mind often goes back to when I was about seven years old and proudly carrying my bucket of horse brushes.
Even then, I loved being prepared.
I was conscientious about grooming the horse, keeping brushes in order, and making sure I had the proper attire ready to go: polished boots, collared shirt tucked in, belt on, hair tied back, and everything where it belonged. Long before I knew the term “professional organizer,” I was already practicing it in a barn aisle.
Looking back, horses may have been one of my first teachers in organization.
Packing for a Horse Show
Last weekend, I drove up to Santa Fe to help my friend with a horse show. I will confess something right now:
I am not a light packer.
I am not one of those organizers who travels with one elegant carry-on and three neutral-colored outfits.
No. I travel like someone who has seen things.
I bring little bags for different categories:
- Toiletries (yes, more than necessary)
- Food and snacks that do not need refrigeration
- A cooler
- Warm clothes: hats, gloves, jackets
- Activity bag: crochet, art projects, Kindle
- A pillow for my lap in the car
- Clothes, including multiple changes “just in case”
- Kitchen bag: plates, silverware, essentials
- Extra empty water bottles
- Gallons of water
I try to think of everything.
Minimalists may shudder. But preparedness has its place.
Then the Flat Tire Happened
And this is where travel organization became very relevant.
We ended up with a flat tire on the truck in the middle of nowhere, just north of Vaughn, New Mexico.
Luckily, we had cell service. Even though my friend had what was needed to fix the flat and knew how to do it, we were on the side of the highway with a horse trailer, so calling AAA felt like a wise upgrade. Amazingly, help arrived quickly.
Unfortunately, the spare tire was too old to trust for the next stretch of road, especially heading into areas with limited cell service.
So we drove into Vaughn, called tire places, and through one of those wonderful small-town miracles, my friend had a friend there who had a used tire in the right size. Better than the spare.
We waited at the tire shop… with the horse.
As one does.
The Unexpected Detour
We then made the decision to turn around and drive back to Roswell, nearly 100 miles in the direction we had come, because we knew the cell service was better there.
Thankfully, my friend’s horse veterinarian is in Roswell, so we were able to find a stall for the horse overnight and get a hotel room for ourselves.
The next morning, we got four new tires put on the truck, plus a new spare, and headed back to Santa Fe for round two.
And we made it.
Why Packing Matters
Here is the part that connects directly to home organization:
We had what we needed.
We stayed warm.
We stayed hydrated.
We had snacks.
We had clean clothes.
We had supplies.
We had options.
When life became inconvenient, we were not in crisis.
That is what good organization does.
It does not prevent every problem. It reduces the stress of problems.
Home Organization Is Just Daily Packing
Many people think organizing is about making things look neat.
But often, organizing is really about preparing your future self.
At home, that might look like:
- Keeping extra batteries where you can find them
- Having basic first aid supplies
- Owning enough sheets for an unexpected mess
- Keeping snacks on hand
- Having a flashlight that actually has batteries in it
- Storing winter gear together
- Knowing where important papers are
- Keeping your car stocked with basics
At a horse show, it looks like layers, water, extra clothes, and practical supplies.
Same skill. Different location.
Are You Overpacking or Wise Packing?
There is a balance, of course.
Sometimes people overpack from anxiety. Sometimes they underpack from optimism.
The sweet spot is thoughtful preparation.
Ask:
- What is likely?
- What would be inconvenient if forgotten?
- What is hard to replace on the road?
- What gives peace of mind without creating chaos?
That question works for travel and for homes.
Final Thought
It had been many years since I competed in a horse show myself, so it was special to go help my friend.
But the weekend also reminded me why organization matters.
Life rarely goes exactly as planned.
Tires go flat. Roads change. Weather shifts. Plans get rerouted.
When your systems are solid, you can pivot with much more ease.
Whether it is a hallway closet, a kitchen pantry, or a truck headed to Santa Fe, organization is less about perfection and more about being ready for real life.
