Why I Love the Accountability of Renewing My Certified Professional Organizer Credential
This year I renewed my Certified Professional Organizer credential for the second time.
I first earned my CPO in 2020, five years into my professional organizer career. I renewed in 2023. And now again in 2026. Every three years, Certified Professional Organizers are required to complete 36 continuing education units. At least one of those hours must be in Ethics.
This cycle, I completed well over 100 CEUs.
Some of those hours came from advanced organizing and productivity trainings. Some came from leadership development and specialized training in brain-based conditions, such as ADHD. And a significant portion came from earning my hypnotherapy certification, which deepens my understanding of behavior, motivation, and change.
I could technically have stopped at 36 hours. But that has never been how I operate.
One of the things I love most about maintaining my certification is the structured accountability. It forces me to stay current. It requires me to continue learning. It reminds me that professionalism is not a one time achievement. It is an ongoing commitment.
The Board of Certification for Professional Organizers does not simply hand out credentials. We are required to demonstrate growth, education, and adherence to a code of ethics. That structure protects clients. It elevates the profession. And it strengthens my own practice.
This year’s required Ethics training was particularly meaningful. I completed Ethics for Organizing and Productivity Professionals, created through NAPO University and led by Debbie Stanley, MA, MS, LPC
The course explored what a true ethical dilemma actually is and how to recognize common ethical pitfalls in client work, peer relationships, and overall business operations. It covered essential tenets such as client dignity and welfare, confidentiality, boundaries of competence, informed consent, intellectual property, and responsibility to the profession.
What I appreciated most was the structured ethical decision making model taught in the course. The process included documenting your thinking, identifying the dilemma, reviewing relevant literature and codes of ethics, consulting with peers, evaluating possible consequences, and intentionally choosing a course of action.
That kind of framework matters.
As professional organizers, we work in deeply personal spaces. We enter homes. We see financial documents. We handle sentimental belongings. We navigate family dynamics. We sometimes support clients experiencing grief, trauma, chronic disorganization, or life transitions.
Ethics is not theoretical. It is practical and necessary.
Completing over 100 CEUs this cycle was not about checking a box. It was about expanding my skill set so I can better serve the people who trust me with their homes and their stories. My hypnotherapy certification allows me to understand subconscious patterns that often drive clutter and procrastination. That knowledge integrates beautifully with organizing work because behavior change is rarely just about bins and labels.
What the CPO Credential Means for You
If you are considering hiring a professional organizer, the CPO credential offers something important. It means the organizer has met nationally recognized standards of competence and experience. It means they have passed an examination based on tested industry knowledge. It means they commit to ongoing continuing education every three years. And it means they agree to uphold a formal Code of Ethics.
In practical terms, that translates into confidentiality, clear boundaries, professional policies, and structured systems that are designed to work long term. It also means you are working with someone who takes this profession seriously.
Renewing my CPO every three years reminds me that excellence is built through consistency. It reminds me that structured accountability is a gift. It ensures that I remain sharp, informed, and ethically grounded.
I am proud to maintain this credential.
And I am grateful to be part of a profession that values learning, growth, and integrity.
