Vision Boards For Home Organization
This past weekend, I attended a vision board workshop hosted by a new friend. She provided magazines, stencils, stickers, and yummy treats. Another friend taught a yoga class prior to making the vision boards so we could all get clear headed and centered before making our boards. In this post, I’ll give you some ideas on how to craft your own vision board for an organized home, and I’ll talk about why vision boards work. If you want to have an organized home this year, keep reading this post!
What Is A Vision Board
A vision board is simply a visual representation of your goals and aspirations. It can be as simple or elaborate as you want. I have made all sorts of vision boards over the years. I’ve made vision boards that are made out of magazine cut-outs (which is the most common way) that I display in a place that I see daily. I have made vision boards that just consist of words on a hand-painted background. I’ve made digital vision board videos. I’ve made vision boards from images that I’ve compiled on my computer and printed out. I’ve made small vision boards that are a hand-made work of art that simply has an affirmation in the form of a question that I see when I open a drawer or inside of a cabinet. The purpose of a vision board is to create a visual reminder of what you’re working towards. It is meant to uplift and inspire you, rather than feel like a goal chart that you’re not accomplishing.
Why Vision Boards Work
Vision boards work by stimulating and activating the Reticular Activating System (RAS) in your brain. Our minds are bombarded with tons and tons of information all day, so your RAS is your way of filtering out the unnecessary information so you can focus on the important stuff. Using a vision board helps remind your RAS what to pay attention to. This will help you recognize opportunities and experiences that align with your goals. This helps you weed out distractions so you can more easily say NO to things that do not support your goals. Vision boards engage your mind and emotions so you can reinforce your goals to your subconscious mind. They help you stay motivated by helping you remember what goals you are setting for yourself and why. Vision boards can also help rewire your brain to refocus on possibility rather than failure.
How To Make Your Own Vision Board
- Set challenging yet attainable goals for yourself, and increase your goals as you earn a track record with yourself. Brainstorm what you want to feel and attain. You can make your vision board be more broad to encompass all areas of life- love, health, money, purpose, and spirituality, or you can make it more specific. You can make a vision board for a very specific goal, like for an organized home, to travel to a certain destination, to attract a partner, to start a business, to get fit, to feel more joy in your life, or whatever else you feel inspired to do.
- For a more organized home, think about all the images you’d like your home to look like. Think about how you would like to feel in your home. Imagine the practical things you’ll need to do to put in the work to be more organized. Then think about the underlying things that are going to help support your body and mind so that you have the physical and mental energy to get your home organized. Do you need more sleep so that you feel better rested and can make decisions easier? Do you need to eat more healthy food so you feel better nourished and have less inflammation in your body? Do you need to spend more time with friends so that you feel more connected to others and inspired to organize your home? Do you need to express more of your talents or engage with the things that truly bring you joy so that you feel more confident? Do you want to read a book on organizing so you can learn how to organize? Brainstorm ways you can support yourself and how you’d like this to be represented on your vision board. And make sure to think about your “why”- why this is so important to you. Not all these images need to be represented on your board, but thinking about all these different angles will help you drill down to what’s going to be the most powerful imagery for you.
- Once you have an idea of what you want your vision board to be, brainstorm what method you want to use. Do you want something digital or physical?
- Sketch out what you want your board to look like. This might shift and morph as you find images you want to include, but it will help you get started putting things together. Think about what sorts of images and words/affirmations you want to include.
- Collect your supplies. Depending on what method you choose, you might need a backing board (foamcore works great), colored papers, old magazines, photos, stencils, markers, and stickers. Amazon sells some really cute and inspiring “vision board stickers”. Don’t forget glue sticks or tape, scissors, and possibly an X-Acto knife and cutting board. Or if you’re making something digitally, check out using a computer program like Canva to help you lay out your designs.
Looking At Your Vision Board
I have come up with all sorts of creative ways for when, where, how, and how often to view your vision board. Play with it, and see what works for you. You may want to put your board in a special place where you devote a few minutes a day looking at your it, or you may want to keep it in a more casual location that you walk past frequently. You may want to try incorporating other senses such as sound (music, sound bowls etc), taste (your favorite beverage, snack, or even something subtle like lip gloss on your lips), scent (essential oils, candles, etc), or touch (holding something that you like the texture/temperature of, or incorporating EFT Tapping).
Below are two other posts I’ve written about vision boards. Check them out for more inspiration!
Send me images of what you make. I’d love to see what you come up with!
